In 2008, the one-on-one conversations I had with volunteers and voters while working for the Obama campaign sparked what is growing into a lifelong fight to advance justice and equality. Many experiences since have left me determined to continue to work to grow talent pipelines, build capacity, and win long-term victories for our movement.
Currently I am the Director of Communication Strategy for Lansing-based consulting and advocacy firm Grassroots Midwest, where I have had the privilege of working directly with many candidates, organizers, and college students, consulting on campaigns as well as working with a number of issue-based clients including non-profits, associations, corporations and labor unions. In the 2016 cycle, this included securing the reelection of Congressman John Conyers in a tough primary, winning an open Democratic primary and competitive general election for the State House with an insurgent candidate, and directing political programs for Michigan labor unions.
In the 2014 cycle I directed communications strategy at the Michigan Democratic Party, in an election cycle where Michigan saw two of the highest-profile statewide races in the country. In 2013 I was the first person hired by the newly-elected MDP leadership for communications and digital strategy, and immediately got to work building a first class operation. In addition to managing staff and many vendors over the cycle, I was responsible for coordinating strategy and digital branding with dozens of campaigns and local organizations, ensuring each of them were an asset to our operation. I also was responsible for media logistics and communications strategy around several national surrogates’ visits to the state, including four in the last month of the campaign.
In addition to completely overhauling the Michigan Democratic Party’s main online branding, our team conceived and produced several issue and action campaigns from the ground up, notably the Michigan Middle Class Alliance, the African American Alliance, and our "I Will Vote" campaign, each of which successfully engaged voters all over the state.
Over my career at Progress Michigan, I worked on a team to implement an aggressive daily online strategy. I was responsible for updating our Twitter profile, monitoring online channels to assist in crafting messaging strategy, racking up hundreds of thousands of views for new videos on YouTube, and even creating and maintaining a Pinterest page, making Progress Michigan the first political organization in Michigan to adopt the emerging social network.
I developed and led Progress Michigan’s lawmaker accountability project, which produced hundreds of hours of video and audio footage of elected officials. Footage obtained through the project was covered by numerous local and national outlets.
On the weekends, I volunteer on the Steering Committee for the Michigan Institute for Contemporary Art, guiding communications strategy and directing a team of volunteers for three summer music events in Lansing: the Lansing JazzFest, Old Town BluesFest, and the Grand American FishRodeo.
I’ve done extensive earned media work, speaking on the record and writing op-eds and press releases for the Michigan Democratic Party, Progress Michigan, the Michigan Institute for Contemporary Art and other clients and partners, as well as under my own name.
